5 tips to avoid water damage in spring

It’s back. No, we don’t mean your deep desire to take a vacation. Spring has officially sprung! And while that’s mostly positive news, sometimes spring comes with its share of unpleasant surprises, including the thawing of the ground and house pipes.

Don’t have a clue how to prevent water damage? Follow our expert advice to maintain your plumbing and identify possible water leaks.

1-Inspect your pipes to make sure they won’t “spring” a leak

In winter, pipes laid too close to the ground or against a poorly insulated wall are the most vulnerable. These potential time bombs often hide in the attic, behind cupboards or in crawl spaces. Pay special attention to the north side of your home, which gets less sun exposure. With an eagle eye, look for any signs of cracks or rust. If you uncover a threat, take action. You don’t want to see your pets swim laps in your basement.

2-Give your water heater a check-up

Your water heater worked hard all winter long and will hit retirement age well before you do. A water heater has a ten-year life span on average. Whip out a flashlight and inspect it top to bottom for leaks or corrosion.

3-Give your faucets the once-over

Now that you’re on a roll, it would be a shame to stop your inspection. Head to the kitchen and bathroom to check for any potential faucet leaks. Take the opportunity to install a filter in each drain, if you haven’t already done so. Whether it’s soap, hair or your teenager viewing the sink as a food garbage disposal, a drain can easily become blocked!

4-Go over your shower with a fine-tooth comb

Built up mineral deposits in your showerhead will affect water flow sooner or later. What should your weapons of choice be? A plastic bag, vinegar and a rubber band! Pour the vinegar into the bag and secure it with the elastic. Wait 24 hours to let the magic happen. Not only will your showerhead look like new, but it will no longer be the source of a potential problem!

5-Book a meeting with your toilet bowl

Yes, you read that right! One easy way to spot a water leak is to add a few drops of food colouring to the water in the tank. After 30 minutes, if the dye has bled from the tank to the toilet bowl, there’s a leak. Make sure to inspect the bowl for cracks as well.
